FSC CERTIFIED SOLID BOARD

In our dedication to sustainability, we at Smurfit Kappa Solid Board  have achieved a certification for FSC on the majority of our products. The FSC, the Forest Stewardship Council, is an international organisation that stimulates responsible forest management. By working with certified product batches, we ensure our customers and their end consumers that the products we manufacture comply with this responsible forest management.

World-wide standards

The FSC establishes world-wide standards for forest management, with an associated quality mark. Independent inspectors monitor compliance with the rules. The core of the work of the FSC is ensuring that forests, both tropical and non-tropical, are properly managed. Furthermore, the FSC makes the timber recognisable for end-users. They can be certain that it comes from well-managed forests because the timber is followed through the whole trading chain.
The instrument that the FSC uses for this is certification, both of the forest management and the trading chain.

Certification

Certification is performed by independent organisations who are accredited by the FSC. The result is that we can say: ‘FSC is only FSC if it carries the FSC label’. You can check this yourself on the international website:

www.fsc-info.org.

Responsible management and recycling
The flow of certified paper proceeds as follows. Cardboard factories that make solid board receive  “post-consumer recovered paper” that is recycled in the paper domain. This is the raw material for the solid board manufacturer. This recycled paper complies with the FSC standard when the composition of the ultimate solid board demonstrably comprises at least 85% FSC paper and/or recycled paper. This finds its way to the consumer, where after use, the cycle is completed when the post-consumer recovered paper is taken in by the solid board manufacturer.
